MSVC supports Airman and Family Readiness at the 910th Airlift Wing
Vienna Township, Ohio, September 15, 2026
The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter supported the U.S. Air Force Reserve’s 910th Airlift Wing’s Airman and Family Readiness (AFR) in early August and mid-September with a MOAA Foundation Community Outreach Grant of $2,500 and plenty of manpower.
Chapter Treasurer Bruce Bille led the project by presenting $1,500 in GetGo Cards to AFR Director Kelly Turner prior to an August 1 Welcome Home event. The cards can be used at GetGo Gas Stations and Markets and Giant Eagle grocery stores, making them ideal for Wing reservists, who travel great distances, including outside the state, to attend drill periods and make their deployments and returns. In addition to the cards, the chapter manned an information table and distributed snacks and beverages to returning airmen and their families, while others led arts and crafts projects as parents received post-deployment briefings from Wing personnel.
The chapter returned to the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna Township, Ohio for the 910th Airlift Wing’s Family Day on Saturday, September 12, with additional beverages and snacks, but the rain put a damper on planned outdoor activities and games for the children of Wing personnel. Chapter member Esther Gartland nonetheless kept the children’s attention with puzzles, games, and craft kits.
Concurrently the chapter is also delivering a $4,250 MOAA Grant to the Youngstown Blue Coats this year, to provide warm weather clothing and outdoor shelters to homeless veterans in northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

June 22, 2026 · Hubbard, OhioMSVC delivers $3,800 MOAA grant to Youngstown Blue CoatsChapter board members toured the Youngstown Blue Coats facility at 2654 North Main Street in Hubbard, Ohio on June 22 and presented a $3,800 MOAA Foundation Community Outreach Grant to supply warm weather clothing and outdoor survival items for the coming winter.ReadClose“The mission is simple,” said Blue Coats Founder and President Patty Summers in the group’s new warehouse. “In America, nobody should freeze to death.” June may not be the month to think about cold weather, even in Ohio, but Blue Coats Vice President and Treasurer Roseann Panning explained that buying items is a year-round task. “MOAA’s grant will go a long way getting us ready for this winter.”
While the Blue Coats often receive clothing from local retailers, they still must purchase some new items to meet specific needs, such as boots, which have to be properly sized and fitted. “Local retailers are wonderfully generous with their donations, but sometimes we have to purchase some items directly,” Summers said. “The MOAA grant gives us the flexibility to purchase what we need.”
The chapter is no stranger to partnering with the Blue Coats. It delivered its first MOAA Foundation Community Outreach Grant of $2,500 in 2025 and supported the group with private donations in 2023 and 2024 through internal chapter fundraising.
Taking the chapter’s support to the next level was the idea of Chapter Vice President and Director of Grants Major Joseph Mersol, USA (Ret). “The MOAA grant is beyond generous,” he said, “but equally vital is teaming with the Blue Coats at community awareness and fundraising events and Veteran Stand Downs throughout the year. We will back up the dollars with hands-on assistance.”
For chapter members who are not of the faint of heart, direct outreach to homeless individuals and veterans at remote encampments in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys can be arranged with prior coordination. As Blue Coats Veteran Liaison and former U.S. Marine John Johnston put it, “It is a life changing experience. It will change your life forever.”
